Boost Your MPG: Mastering Your Honda Hybrid

Driving a 2026 Honda Civic, Accord, or CR-V Hybrid around town is one of the best ways to keep your fuel costs down. While these cars are incredibly smart, a few simple changes to how you navigate our local roads can make a massive difference in your monthly gas bill.

1. Follow the Green Glow

Your Honda has a built-in coach called Eco Assist™. Watch the glowing bars around your speedometer while you're driving through the village or down Fairmount Ave:

  • Green: You’re in the "sweet spot" and saving money.
  • White: You’re stepping on it a bit too hard.

The goal is to keep those bars green as much as possible. Steady, smooth starts allow the electric motor to do the heavy lifting before the gas engine has to step in.

2. Use the Steering Wheel Paddles

Those "shifters" behind your steering wheel aren't for racing—they are Deceleration Selectors that control regenerative braking. When you see a red light ahead or you’re heading down a hill toward the lake, pull the Left Paddle (-). This increases the regenerative force, slowing the car while "capturing" energy to pump back into your battery.

Pro Tip: In Normal or ECON mode, the car will automatically reset to default braking after a few seconds of steady driving. If you want the car to "hold" your custom braking level for a long descent, switch to Sport mode.

3. Pick the Right Mode for the Drive

  • ECON Mode: Your best friend for daily driving. It smooths out the gas pedal and helps the car stay in electric mode longer.
  • Sport Mode: Great for a quick burst of power when merging onto I-86, but switch back to ECON once you're up to speed to keep your MPG high.
  • Snow Mode: A lifesaver on those messy Western New York mornings. It adjusts the throttle for less "snap" to help your tires grip the slushy side streets.

4. Use Your Seats, Not Just the Heater

On a freezing morning in Lakewood, cranking the cabin heat to 80°F forces the gas engine to run constantly just to stay warm. To save fuel, rely on your heated seats and steering wheel instead. They keep you warm while allowing the hybrid system to turn the engine off more often when you're stopped at a light.

Bonus: Use the Recirculate button on your climate control. It’s much more efficient to maintain the temperature of the air already inside the car than to constantly heat up freezing air from outside.

5. Advanced Tip: The "Pulse and Glide"

Veteran hybrid drivers use a technique called "Pulse and Glide." Accelerate gently to your target speed (the Pulse), then lift your foot off the pedal for a second before lightly reapplying just enough pressure to maintain that speed (the Glide). This often "tricks" the car into switching from the gas engine to the electric motor, even at higher speeds.

6. Keep it Light and Tight

  • Check Your Tires: Cold snaps cause tire pressure to drop fast. Under-inflated tires create "drag." Check your PSI once a month.
  • Clear the Gear: If you aren’t headed out for a weekend of kayaking, take those roof racks off. Every bit of wind resistance costs you money at the pump.

7. Watch the "Power Flow"

Switch your driver display to the Power Flow Monitor. It shows you exactly when the battery is helping and when the engine is charging. Once you see the "magic" happening in real-time, you’ll naturally start driving more efficiently.
